Gerry has many interests and was
a member of "The Chosen Man Society" a society which is dedicated to the Richard Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell - Obviously every Sharpe fan would love to go to some of the sites the NMBS
have visited and Gerry was certainly ecstatic to visit Waterloo and Quatre Bras. Gerry's strong Irish
roots have made other places that he visited particularly noteworthy for him.
Examples include the "Irish
Stone" at Culloden and The Island of Ireland Peace Park in Ypres. It also has made the other members of the NMBS
know who Regimental
Sergeant Major Patrick Harper is! The Birr
Crossroads in Ypres were also important for him as Birr (in Ireland) holds a strong family connection for him and when
we visited Gerry gave a brilliant account of the connection

This Irish connection continues with his love of the
Irish RU football team and the London Irish RU football team. Indeed the last two Rugby World Cups have been whilst we
have visited France and Gerry watching the Irish RU with passion have surprised some Frenchmen in some bar-tabacs.
Gerry has been on all the NMBS trips
and indeed is the only member of the society who has a Masters in History. Gerry is the sensible one of the NMBS
but has a very mischievous side. Gerry and Steve have a huge problem together – if one of them gets
the giggles (and this happens often) the other one can’t stop – usually resulting in tears streaming down the
faces of both.

Gerry has great culinary skills and his pears in port are wonderful. Gerry is one of the most meticulous members of NMBS and will collect all the maps and information
on places visited for reference. His love of concertina postcards is infamous.
